Here’s an intriguing pattern: 51% of renters said they wanted an apartment with an internet-connected refrigerator. All of the following amenities are preferred over a smart fridge:

  • Virtual personal assistants (43 percent)
  • Washer and dryer stacked (47 percent)
  • A completely furnished apartment (21 percent)

Which amenities were deemed essential? Unsurprisingly, central air conditioning received the highest percentage of responses (74%). Renters also considered a dishwasher (63%) and garbage disposal (56%) to be necessities. A washer/dryer in the unit (55 percent), high-speed internet access (48 percent), and a microwave oven rounded out the top necessities list (47 percent).

What recent events have changed renters’ perceptions of essential apartment amenities? Surprisingly, spending more time at home hasn’t changed much. At real estate marketplace portals, it was discovered that “in-unit washer/dryer” was the most popular filter in 2019, and this is still the case today (21 percent and 20 percent, respectively). Dog-friendly remained at 13%, with air conditioning rounding out the top three at 11%.

So, what are the upcoming property amenities? Yes, you guessed it! (Or perhaps not.) The amenity of the future is movable walls. For instance, apartment spaces will allow you to use rooms in a variety of ways. Like the dining table could be stored and hidden, only to be retrieved when needed.

Your future apartment will not only be adaptable but also intelligent. Apartments could include everything from smart bulbs that you can turn on before you get home to a refrigerator that alerts you when an item is about to expire. Future apartment communities may also be more relaxing, with more green space and on-site yoga studios.
