Spark AR Studios: How to Create an AR Filter
This tutorial will teach you how to create custom filters for Instagram Stories.
Step 1: Get Spark AR Studio.
Spark AR Studio is a simple platform for creating custom filters and effects. It is currently available for Mac and Windows.
Step 2: Choose your effect.
Then, go through the tutorials in the Learning Center to familiarize yourself with the program’s interface. When you’re ready to begin, decide whether to build a filter from scratch or use one of the eight templates.
We’ll go over the World Object template step by step. This entails bringing a 3D object into the actual world, similar to what Coca-Cola Poland achieved with its polar bear.
Step 3: Starting Out
When you open the template, you’ll notice a placeholder object in the center panel. The middle panel is known as the Viewport. This is where you will construct your filter.
The Simulator is the iPhone 8 in the corner. This is where you will see a preview of your work. You can change the Simulator from an iPhone 8 to another smartphone using the dropdown.
The Scene panel is on the left. The options here will be used to alter your Instagram Stories AR filters.
Step 4: Add a 3D asset.
Choose a 3D asset from the AR Library or import your own for your filter. We’re using free support from the AR Library for this guide. You can also choose from free audio files, animations, and other resources in the AR Library.
Step 5: Change the behavior of the uploaded image.
In the Viewport, you should now see your uploaded asset—in this example, a revolving pizza. Edit how it looks, moves, and interacts with the natural environment using the Scene panel. The changes will result in your AR filter.
For example, you can alter ambient light’s color and intensity. The photos below show the 3D object without ambient lighting (top) and with ambient lighting (bottom) (below).

To add depth to a 3D object, change the directional light.
Select whether the effect is available for the front, back, or both cameras.
Change the animation of the 3D item you’ve submitted.
Increase the number of elements in your effect, such as animations, textures, and materials.
Step 6: Put your theory to the test.
Send your test file to Instagram or Facebook to see how it looks on Instagram or Facebook Stories. Alternatively, you can download the Spark AR Player app.
Step 7: Make your impact public.
Now, press the “upload” button in the lower left-hand corner. It’s directly underneath the “test on device” button.
Keep in mind that your new effect will be available later. First, your creation will be scrutinized to ensure that it complies with Spark AR’s policies and guidelines. This review process could take as little as a few days or as long as a week.
