Harvesting and Planting of Gourds and Pumpkins
Gourds and pumpkins are harvested in the fall after the leaves have died back and the fruits are ripe. The best time to harvest is when the weather is dry and sunny.
To harvest, cut the stem about four inches from the base of the fruit with a sharp knife. Be careful not to damage the stem. Handle the fruit gently to avoid bruising.
Pumpkins and gourds can be stored for several months if they are kept in a cool, dark place with good ventilation. To store, cure the fruits by placing them in a warm room (80-85 degrees F) for 10 days. This will help them last longer. After curing, wash the fruits in a mild bleach solution to prevent mold and then store in a cool, dark place.
To plant, choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Gourds and pumpkins need room to spread out, so give them plenty of space. Sow seeds indoors about six weeks before your area’s last frost date or direct sow outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.

How to Buy Pumpkins?
When it comes to buying pumpkins, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. Here are a few tips on how to buy pumpkins:
- Decide what type of pumpkin you want. There are many different types of pumpkins available, so it is important to decide which one you want before making a purchase. Do you want a small pumpkin for decoration or a large pumpkin for carving?
- Consider the size of the pumpkin. Pumpkins come in all different sizes, so make sure to pick one that is the right size for what you need it for. If you are unsure, ask the seller for help in picking the right size pumpkin for your needs.
- Choose a healthy-looking pumpkin. When picking out a pumpkin, look for one that is free of blemishes and has an even shape. Avoid pumpkins that have soft spots or bruised areas as these may indicate that the pumpkin is not fresh.
- Inspect the stem of the pumpkin. The stem should be firmly attached to the body of the pumpkin and should not be broken or damaged in any way. A healthy stem is important as it helps prevents rot from setting in.
- Tap on the pumpkin before purchasing it. Gently tap on the side of the pumpkin with your fingers and listen for a hollow sound. This indicates that the inside of the pumpkin is dry and ready to be carved or used in cooking recipes. Avoid pumpkins that sound dull when tapped as this may indicate that the pumpkin is starting to rot.
- Check the price. Pumpkins can vary in price depending on their size, type, and where you purchase them. Compare prices at different stores before making a final purchase.
